The Mechanical Arts
The Mechanical Arts
The classical liberal arts tradition honors the mechanical arts — the practical and performing arts through which human beings make, build, and create. Where the liberal arts perfect the mind, the mechanical arts perfect the work of our hands, giving form to beauty and usefulness in the world.
Traditionally, this included everything from weaving and agriculture to medicine and theater. At Sts. Peter and Paul, the mechanical arts are woven throughout school life — not as extracurricular add-ons, but as an essential dimension of a complete human formation. A child who learns to draw, sing, build, or perform is learning to participate in the creative work of a God who called His creation good.
Visual arts
Drawing, painting, and design — training the eye to perceive beauty and the hand to express it.
Performing arts
Drama, choir, and music performance — forming the voice, the body, and the imagination in service of truth and beauty.
Craft and making
Hands-on projects across subjects — calligraphy, bookmaking, science experiments — that connect learning to the physical world.
Physical education
The formation of a healthy body as the dwelling place of the soul — ordered toward virtue, teamwork, and self-discipline.
